Project CARE

Project CARE (Coaches Are Role Models for Empowerment) is an intiative of the College at the University of Rochester and the Rochester City School District. The comprehensive tutoring/role modeling program focuses on K-6 graders in need of academic and social support combines numerous educational and developmental models to encourage excellence from both students and volunteers. The goals of the program are to empower students to achieve higher academic levels, encourage higher attendance rates, promote positive behavior, and to help students develop future aspirations and goals.

M.K. Gandhi Institute

Working in partnership with University of Rochester students and other organizations, the M.K. Gandhi Institute works with local children, helping them learn about alternatives to conflict. The Institute teaches nonviolence through service projects, plants food and flower gardens in Rochester, tends sections of the nearby Genesee River, participates in urban agriculture to reduce hunger and create jobs, and supports a grassroots movement to make Rochester a national leader in restorative justice. They strive to identify, support, and create projects and social systems in which all lives are valued equally and where means and ends are understood to be inextricably linked.
